Where the magic begins!

The Canadian Institute for Vocal Arts (CIVA) is an intensive 5-week summer program in Montreal, offering high-caliber training and exceptional performance opportunities to prominent young professionals in opera singing, piano, conducting, and stage direction from around the world.

The 2027 edition, held in Montreal, Canada, will offer a $1,200 scholarship to all accepted singers, conductors, pianists, and stage directors.

Performance Experience:
Fully staged opera performance with chamber orchestra and piano: Les mamelles de Tirésias by Poulenc and L'enfant et les sortilèges by Ravel
Semi-staged opera performance(s) with symphony orchestra: 2 hours of famous Italian opera scenes (bel canto and beyond), partially staged and conducted by our fellows
Solo aria recital(s) at a broadcast audition event
Additional performance opportunities with piano and small ensemble

Professional Development:
Private voice lessons and coaching with an exceptional world-class faculty
Public masterclasses
Professional audio and video recordings of performances
Professional audio and video demo recording of an opera aria of choice
Professional photos (portraits)
Workshops on performance anxiety, speech therapy, career management, social media, and community outreach

A first round of evaluation will take place via documentation submitted online. The results of this evaluation will be communicated no later than Saturday, November 14, and an invitation for the second round will then be sent.

A second round of auditions will take place both in person in Montreal OR via Zoom for international candidates on Friday, November 20. Fewer than 60 candidates will be selected for this second round.

The selection of candidates for CIVA 2027 will be announced before December 15, 2026.
